Make Hay While the Sun Shines.

As sales people, I think we often fall prey to the "Self Serving Bias" of when sales are good, we tend to think it is because of our "superior" sales skills but, when business slows, we are quick to blame the economy (or some other external factor). I tend to think that we actually have far less control than we think (I better duck now...). Just think of all of the "less than superb" salespeople that just happen to have a hot product that everybody wants. Is that sales person better than you or does their circumstance simply put them in a better position?? I am of the opinion that recognizing (and acting on) opportunity is what really matters when in both good and bad economic times. Sales will be up and down but at least we are taking advantage and let's be honest, when things slow down, it is good opportunity to invest in ourselves and hone our craft (reading, courses etc). There is no need to panic (as long as we have managed our commissions effectively but that is a topic for another time). In short, make hay while the sun shines, always be on the lookout to take advantage of opportunity and use "slow cycles" to prepare for the next wave (which always seems to come).
